Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Allergic contact dermatitis is a common skin condition that occurs when your immune system reacts to a substance that comes into contact with your skin. Although the rash itself is not contagious, it can be intensely itchy, uncomfortable, and frustrating, especially when the trigger is not obvious.
At Vue Dermatology & Laser, we help patients identify the underlying cause of allergic contact dermatitis, relieve symptoms, and develop a plan to prevent future flare-ups.
The most important step in treatment is identifying and avoiding the allergen responsible for the reaction. Once exposure is eliminated, the skin often improves significantly.
Depending on the severity of the rash, treatment may include:
- Prescription topical corticosteroid creams to reduce inflammation and itching
- Non-steroidal prescription anti-inflammatory creams for sensitive areas such as the face or eyelids
- Fragrance-free moisturizers to restore the skin barrier and promote healing
- Oral medications for more severe or widespread reactions
Most patients improve with appropriate treatment, although the rash may take several weeks to completely resolve.
Once the responsible allergen has been identified, avoiding future exposure is the best way to prevent additional flare-ups.
Simple preventive measures include:
- Reading ingredient labels carefully
- Choosing fragrance-free skincare products
- Moisturizing regularly to maintain a healthy skin barrier
- Wearing protective gloves when appropriate
- Following your dermatologist’s recommendations after patch testing
Because many allergens are hidden in everyday products, professional guidance can be extremely helpful in preventing recurrent rashes.
You should schedule an evaluation if:
- Your rash keeps coming back.
- Over-the-counter treatments are not helping.
- The itching is severe or affecting your sleep.
- The rash is spreading or becoming painful.
- You suspect a product is causing your symptoms.
- The cause of your rash remains unclear.
Prompt evaluation can help identify the underlying trigger, relieve symptoms more quickly, and reduce the risk of developing chronic eczema from repeated exposure.
At Vue Dermatology & Laser, we understand how frustrating persistent rashes can be. Our goal is not only to treat the inflammation but also to identify the underlying cause whenever possible. Through a thorough evaluation and, when appropriate, patch testing, we help patients find long-term relief and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.
If you are experiencing an itchy or recurring rash, contact Vue Dermatology & Laser to schedule an evaluation with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, and develop a personalized treatment plan.
