Fraxel Dual Laser Resurfacing
Advanced Skin Renewal with Minimal Downtime
Fraxel® Dual is one of the most trusted and effective non-ablative fractional lasers used in dermatology. At Vue Dermatology & Laser, we use Fraxel Dual to help patients safely improve the appearance of skin texture, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars—without the downtime of more aggressive resurfacing procedures.
Using dual wavelengths to target both the surface and deeper layers of skin, Fraxel Dual offers a precise and customized approach to skin rejuvenation. Whether you’re seeking preventative maintenance or correction of specific concerns, this treatment delivers real results.
Fraxel Dual is a fractional, non-ablative laser that has the ability to treat the skin with one or two different wavelengths of light energy from a single device:
- 1927 nm wavelength (Thulium): Targets pigmentation and superficial sun damage in the epidermis.
- 1550 nm wavelength (Erbium glass): Penetrates deeper to address wrinkles, acne scars, and collagen remodeling.
This dual-wavelength system allows us to target both the surface and underlying structures of the skin in a single session, making Fraxel Dual an incredibly versatile and efficient option.
Because it’s a fractional laser, only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time in a stippled pattern—leaving surrounding tissue untouched. This allows effective collagen stimulation in the targeted zones while also reducing healing time.
Fraxel Dual is FDA-cleared to treat several common skin conditions, including:
- Sun damage and age spots
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars and surgical scars
- Actinic keratoses (precancerous lesions)
It’s most commonly used on the face, neck, chest, and hands, but can be applied to almost any area with signs of aging or sun damage.
Before your treatment begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to ensure your comfort. Once the skin is fully numbed (usually 45–60 minutes), the Fraxel laser handpiece is rolled across the treatment zone multiple times in smooth, even motions. Patients often describe the sensation as a warm prickling feeling. Cold air is blown onto the treatment zone during the treatment to improve comfort. Treatment times vary based on the size of the treatment area; most treatments are about 15 minutes.
One of the benefits of Fraxel Dual is the reduced downtime compared to ablative lasers. Here’s what to expect:
Day 1–2: Your skin will appear red and may feel warm, similar to a sunburn. Swelling is normal and should be expected after the treatment, particularly around the eyes.
Day 3–5: As swelling and redness subside, the skin may begin to flake or peel as the treated tissue is shed and replaced with fresh, healthy skin. Sun spots and other discoloration will darken prior to peeling.
By Day 7: Most of the redness and peeling have resolved. You may notice a smoother texture and more even tone, with results continuing to improve over time.
It’s important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen diligently during the healing process, as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun; a sunburn during the healing phase can impact treatment results.
When targeting primarily pigmentation and texture, many patients see significant improvement after 1–2 treatments. For deeper concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, or more advanced photoaging, a series of 3–5 sessions is likely more appropriate. Treatments are typically spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.
Because Fraxel stimulates collagen production, results continue to develop over several months as your skin regenerates.
